SBP gets IATF nod to host FIBA qualifiers
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has received the approval of the IATF to host the final window of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers in June under a bubble setup.
Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque on Friday confirmed in a press briefing that the task force has issued the green light to the federation to hold the games in Clark City, where players from 12 countries, including the Philippines, will play.
"The IATF has approved the request of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas to host international basketball or the FIBA Asia Cup Cup Qualifiers in June 2021 under a bubble-type in Clark, Pampanga," the official said.
According to the IATF, all non-player participants not otherwise covered by FIBA rules, whether foreign or local, must self-isolate upon arrival in the venue until the testing on the sixth day.
The IATF said the Philippine Sports Commission shall monitor and supervise compliance with health and safety protocols of the event.
Designated hotels within the bubble shall not accept other guests outside of the participants, the IATF added.
The Philippines will host Groups A, B, and C in a tournament set from June 16 to 20.
Group A comprises the Philippines, Korea, Thailand, and Indonesia while Group B features Chinese Taipei, Japan, Malaysia, and China.
Australia, New Zealand, Guam, and Hong Kong, meanwhile, compose Group C.
Aside from the Philippines, Jordan will also host the qualifying tournament for Group E of Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, and Group F, which includes Kazakhstan, Palestine, Sri Lanka, and Jordan.
The Jordan window will run from June 12 to 14.
The Philippines will face Korea twice and Indonesia once and will need only a win to advance.
