Rising Gilas forward Carl Tamayo sustains injury in win vs Indonesia

Gilas Pilipinas may have earned a big victory over Indonesia, 76-51, but it might have come at a price.

Carl Tamayo, the budding young forward for the Philippine national team, suffered an injury in the fourth quarter. He was later diagnosed with a Grade 1 sprain and could miss the closing game of the qualifiers against South Korea on Sunday.

The 20-year-old prospect had a bad landing on Indonesia's Arki Wisnu's foot while the two were fighting for a rebound at the 7:46 mark of the fourth quarter.

After Gilas closed out the game against the visiting Indonesians, he was wheeled off the court on a wheelchair.

“Carl currently has a grade one sprain so it’s not overly serious but he’s in pain, he still feels pain in the ankle,”  said Gilas mentor Tab Baldwin.

"It may be upgraded once examined further but I think that certainly he won’t be active at all tomorrow."

Tamayo was among the bright spots in Gilas' 25-point win over Indonesia on Friday night.

The University of the Philippines-commit finished with six points, four rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals to help Gilas grab its fifth win in as many games in the qualifiers.

Though he started the game slow, his back-to-back threes in the fourth quarter proved crucial as they pushed the Philippines' lead up to 21 points, 59-38.

He also played well in the team's win over South Korea last Wednesday, scoring 10 points in a little over 10 minutes of play.

And whether he could continue where he left off this Sunday remains up in the air pending the ruling of their team physician.

Baldwin added that Tamayo might not even be present when Gilas regroups tomorrow in preparation for their last game.

"Whether he would be alright for Sunday, I would say, it’s not probable," said Baldwin.

"But until the doctors give me more information, I don't know."
