2023 FIBA World Cup draw set for Tuesday

The road to the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup starts on Tuesday as the International Basketball Federation conducts the draw ceremony for the tournament's qualifiers.

A total of 80 countries are vying to be included in the 32 teams which will play in the World Cup to be held in Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines.

Africa will have 16 national teams vying for five spots, while the Americas will also have 16 countries for seven spots. For the European qualifiers, 32 teams will vie for 12 spots, while in Asia/Oceania, 16 teams will try to book one of the six spots allotted.

As hosts, the Philippines and Japan are already assured of slots for the World Cup. However, they still need to play in the first and second round of the Asian qualifiers. The two countries will advance to the next rounds, no matter what the results are.

Indonesia, meanwhile, needs to finish in the top eight of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup to receive automatic qualification.

If Indonesia fails to land in the top eight, FIBA said the general rules for qualification to the 2023 FIBA World Cup  shall apply.

The Philippines will host the final phase of the 2023 World Cup while several games from the group phase will be hosted by Japan and Indonesia.

The World Cup continental qualifiers will run in six windows from November 2021 to February 2023.
