Tim Cone wants ‘something special’ for Mark Caguioa as retirement talk looms

Barangay Ginebra head coach Tim Cone would want to do something special for the duo of Mark Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand as talk of the former’s retirement loom.

Cone told reporters in the PBA Media Day on Thursday that “Mark [Caguioa] has quietly, from what I understand, decided to retire.”

Though Caguioa has not publicly announced anything yet, Cone said, “Maybe we can get him and Jayjay together and do something special.”

Helterbrand, Caguioa's longtime backcourt partner, retired from the league in 2017.

The multi-titled mentor said Caguioa is no longer attending practices ahead of the league’s opening ahead of its 47th season. Cone added that from his understanding, Caguioa is not under contract anymore.

“You need to talk on our management on that,” reiterated Cone.

On Wednesday, team governor Alfrancis Chua said Caguioa will skip the upcoming Philippine Cup as he “needs to fix something.”
