Guarino triple lifts Letran over FEU, NU deals UP's first loss
Neil Guarino drilled the game-winning triple to push Colegio de San Juan de Letran past Far Eastern University, 72-70, on Sunday in the 15th Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.
Guarino made the shot with 14 seconds left in the clock after being down 70-69 in the tight affair. It was the biggest shot for him in the game as he tallied seven points and four rebounds for the Knights' second win.
King Caralipio led the Muralla-based squad with 20 points and nine boards while Brent Paraiso added 16 points.
Earlier, National University completed a come-from-behind win and dealt the University of the Philippines its first loss in six games, 74-72.
With the Bulldogs up 73-69 with a minute and eleven seconds left, Carl Tamayo connected from beyond the arc to trim their deficit to just a single point. However, a split from John Lloyd Clemente off a Harold Alarcon foul sealed the deal for NU, despite Joel Cagulangan's attempt to steal the game.
Clemente tallied 15 markers, while LA Casinillo and Steve Nash Enriquez added 14 and 13 each for NU's fourth straight win. Spoiled in the NU win was Carl Tamayo's double-double effort with 24 points and 10 boards.
Meanwhile, De La Salle University trounced Lyceum of the Philippines University, 88-65 for their third straight win.
Filoil action will return on Tuesday.
