UP exacts revenge against NU; FEU gets third straight win at expense of UE


University of the Philippines avenged their first round loss against National University, 75-63, to open their second round campaign in UAAP Season 85 on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Trailing by one, 63-62, with less than five minutes left in the fourth period, the Fighting Maroons surged with a 13-0 run to take the win. Crucial in the run was Cyril Gonzales who scored 12 of his 15 points in the final frame.

"Ginawa ko lang 'yung dapat kong gawin. Bonus na lang sakin 'yung puntos," Gonzales said in a post-game conference.

Zav Lucero tallied a game-high 16 markers, while James Spencer chipped in 11 points in the win which improved the Diliman-based squad's standings to 7-1.

Michael Malonzo led the Bulldogs with 12 points, while Steve Nash Enriquez added 11 points in the NU loss which brought them down to 5-3.

Earlier, Far Eastern University notched its third straight win at the expense of the University of the East, 75-68.

Xyrus Torres tallied a game-high 22 markers while LJ Gonzales added 14 points. Patrick Tchuente registered a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Tamaraws' third win in eight games.

Nick Paranada made 21 points while Luis Villegas had 13 points and 10 rebounds in the UE loss which pulled them to 3-5.

UAAP action will return on Wednesday with UP going against Adamson University and FEU facing De La Salle University. UE will try to get a win against University of Santo Tomas at 11 am while NU will try to bounce back when they play Ateneo de Manila at 6:30 pm. All the said games will be played at the Mall of Asia Arena.
