Team USA to play in the Philippines for 2023 FIBA World Cup Group Phase

Team USA will be heading to the Philippines to play its group games in the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

According to an announcement made by FIBA on Monday, the host countries have selected preferred teams to play the Group Phase in their respective countries.

"FIBA’s Central Board has confirmed, after consultation with the host nations, that USA will play in the Philippines, Slovenia will travel to Japan and Canada will land in Indonesia. Both Slovenia and Canada have qualified for the World Cup, while USA are in a good position to clinch a berth in the tournament field in the last Window of the Qualifiers," FIBA said in a release.

FIBA added "Each host could select a preferred team based on commercial reasons, as their choice will have no impact on the integrity of the event or the draw process."

As host of the Group and Final phase, the Philippines will be put in Pot 1 in the draw, along with other best ranked teams after the last window of the World Cup qualifiers in February 2023, where the other competitors will be determined.

Due to this, FIBA said the Philippines and USA will be placed in two different groups out of four that the Philippines will host. Two groups each will play in Japan and Indonesia.

The FIBA World Cup draw will be held on April 29.
