Benilde takes down Letran in preseason tourney


After their finals encounter in NCAA Season 98 on December 22, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde took down defending NCAA champions Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 78-66, in the Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Wednesday in San Juan.

The final period opened with Letran leading 57-55, before the Blazers made a 14-0 run with triples from Zenric Jarque, Robi Nayve, and Chris Flores. Those gave the Taft-based squad a 12-point lead, enough to give them control of the game until the final buzzer.

Migs Oczon had 15 points while Felipe Marasigan had 14 points for Benilde's third win in four games. Nayve and Prince Carlos had 12 and 10 points apiece.

Meanwhile, Kobe Monje led the Intramuros-based squad with 16 points while Nicko Fajardo had 13 as the Knights went down to 1-1.

Earlier, De La Salle University defeated Adamson University, 77-67, while Lyceum of the Philippines University defeated San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 73-66. The University of the East, meanwhile, demolished FAITH Colleges, 119-64.

Filoil action will return on Friday as NCAA teams Emilio Aguinaldo College and Arellano University tussle at 10 am, while Letran will try to bounce back against NCAA Season 99 hosts Jose Rizal University at noontime.

UE and Far Eastern University will have a go at 2 p.m. while Adamson will face UP at 4 p.m.
