MPBL fines, suspends Marikina Shoemasters coach for hitting player
The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) on Tuesday slapped Marikina Shoemasters head coach Elvis Tolentino with a fine and suspension for hitting one of his players during a game.
According to a statement released by the league on July 4, the MPBL said it will fine Tolentino P75,000 while also handing him a one-game suspension following commissioner Kenneth Duremdes' and the league's review and evaluation.
"We would like to reiterate our commitment to fostering a positive and safe environment that is free from violence and conducive to fair play, respect, and sportsmanship for all players, coaches, and staff members during every game day and every event," Duremdes said.
The incident happened during Marikina's game against Pasig last June 27, which the latter won in a 71-66 triumph.
The league deemed it "conduct unbecoming of a professional basketball coach".
The Games and Amusements Board (GAB) is also conducting a separate probe into the matter, saying the government body is committed to ensure a fair and just resolution.
"GAB remains dedicated to promoting the highest standards of sportsmanship and professionalism in all sporting events under our jurisdiction," GAB said in a statement.
"Any actions that compromise the integrity of the game will not be tolerated."
GMA Integrated News is trying to reach Tolentino for comment.
