PBA: San Miguel downs NLEX, clinches top spot with win no. 9
San Miguel clinched the top spot of the PBA Philippine Cup after notching its ninth win as it defeated NLEX, 120-103, on Sunday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig.
After the Road Warriors' 5-2 lead early in the game, the Beermen took over and eventually ended the first half in their favor, 50-41.
The Beermen pulled away in the third period as it unloaded 33 points to take an 83-71 advantage at the end of the said frame. San Miguel eventually sealed the deal as back-to-back baskets from Jericho Cruz and a triple by CJ Perez late gave the Beermen a 19-point lead less than a minute before the final buzzer.
Perez posted 30 points, nine rebounds, and two assists, while June Mar Fajardo registered 21 boards and 20 points.
Enoch Valdez took charge with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Jhan Nermal had 16 points and five boards as NLEX missed the services of Robert Bolick as his wife gave birth to their new son.
The Beermen still have Blackwater and Meralco in their remaining assignments, while NLEX will still face Rain or Shine and Barangay Ginebra as the playoff race continues.
