Meralco not yet satisfied with Game 1 win vs San Miguel

Meralco may have been the only team that has beaten San Miguel in the ongoing PBA Philippine Cup, but for the Bolts, it is not yet over until it is over.

Back in May 4 during their elimination round face-off in Batangas City, the Bolts defeated the Beermen, 95-92.

More than a month later, Meralco won again versus San Miguel to open their best-of-seven finals series.

"Winning Game 1 is always a big help, but by no means are we happy or satisfied. It's just one game," Chris Newsome said on Wednesday.

"It doesn't necessarily mean because we won Game 1 that we won the series. There is much more to be done."

While momentum may be on Meralco's side as they extended their winning streak to three since the semifinals, the Bolts are still wary of how San Miguel could make a come back.

"This team is a championship team. They are a dynasty team. They are capable of doing amazing things," Newsome said.

"All I know is that they are going to go back to the drawing board and find ways to try to execute much better and to counter everything that we made tonight."

Meanwhile, the Beermen admitted that Meralco had better defense in their opener.

“Maganda ‘yung depensa nila. Dami rin naming turnovers. ‘Yun ‘yung pinoint out ni coach. Madami rin silang nashoot na threes. Si Cliff [Hodge] ang dami niyang offensive rebounds. Bounce back na lang. [It is a] Long series.”

(They had good defense, we had a lot of turnovers as well. That's what coach pointed out. They shot threes. Cliff had offensive rebounds. Just bounce back. Long series."

Game 2 of the finals will be played on Friday.
