NLEX names Jong Uichico new Road Warriors head coach

NLEX has shuffled its personnel ahead of its bid for a fresh campaign in the 49th season of the PBA, tapping veteran mentor Jong Uichico as the new Road Warriors head coach.

The management announced the development on Friday as the franchise let go of Frankie Lim, who called the shots for the squad in the past four conferences and led them to two playoff appearances out of those.

“The NLEX Road Warriors are excited to take this new journey with coach Jong Uichico,” said NLEX Corporation President and General Manager Luigi Bautista in a statement.

“He brings a wealth of experience to the squad and a clear idea of what it takes to win a championship as the fourth-winningest coach in PBA history.”

Uichico, who boasts nine PBA titles under his belt, will inherit a squad that features some stars in Robert Bolick, Baser Amer, Michael Miranda, Enoch Valdez, and Sean Anthony.

The Road Warriors had an impressive start to the ongoing 2024 PBA Philippine Cup, but encountered a long slump towards the end of the elimination round to finish at sixth spot. They then took on Meralco in the best-of-three quarterfinals, which the Bolts wrapped up in two games to eliminate the Road Warriors from contention.

Under Uichico, the team will be looking to make a better finish come the new season of the league.

“We are grateful to coach Frankie Lim for his dedication to the Road Warriors and we thank him for his contributions,” said NLEX Governor Ronald Dulatre.

“We also thank coach Jong Uichico for taking on this new challenge to lead the Road Warriors as we start our preparations for the upcoming PBA season.”
