Charles Tiu believes Dubai-bound Strong Group a 'much better team' despite shorter prep time
Strong Group Athletics head coach Charles Tiu said this year's lineup for the Dubai International Basketball Championship is a 'much better team' despite having shorter preparation time.
Last year's SGA team, who finished as runners-up to Al Riyadi in Dubai, included the likes of Dwight Howard, Andre Roberson, Mckenzie Moore, Justine Baltazar, and Jordan Heading, Kevin Quiambao, Francis Escandor, and JD Cagulangan.
Returning this year, meanwhile, are Andray Blatche and De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde standouts Allen Liwag, Tony Ynot, and Justine Sanchez.
However, they will be joined by DeMarcus Cousins, Malachi Richardson, Terry Larrier, Mikey Williams, Jason Brickman, Dave Ildefonso, Rhenz Abando, and Chris Koon.
"I think we have a much better team this year. Obviously, we just need to stay healthy first," Tiu said on the sidelines of their practice on Sunday in Mandaluyong.
One that stands out for this year's squad is the inclusion of Cousins who arrived in Manila just last Wednesday. He may have had only a few days of practice, but Tiu believes Cousins is getting along well with the team.
"I don't think we've had an import like this and it's still just practice. I'm excited to see him in the game," said Tiu.
"I think we have a good relationship. We've been spending a lot of time here. I'm really excited to get the chance to work with him. So far, he's been very coachable.
"I have no complaints with the way he's conducted himself so far. I think he's really good for our team."
The Strong Group crew will fly to Dubai on Thursday, with the tourney starting on Friday.
