FEU-D spoils Adamson's title defense opener; DLSZ outlasts UPIS in OT

UAAP juniors basketball: FEU-D's Cabs Cabonillas

Far Eastern University-Diliman took down defending champion Adamson University, 75-71, in the opening game of UAAP Season 87 boys basketball tournament Sunday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Gilas Youth team member Cabs Cabonillas stuffed the stat sheet with 25 points, 17 rebounds, four assists, and four steals to lead the Baby Tamaraws, while Marc Burgos added a double-double of his own with 19 points and 10 rebounds, along with one block.

"Nag-stick lang kami sa game plan. Kung ano 'yung game plan namin sa practice, adjust lang ng onti kasi may kumpiyansa naman ako dito sa mga bata ko na mao-overcome nila," said FEU head coach Denok Miranda.

Mark Esperanza, Earl Medina, and Henry Penafiel scored 19, 14, and 12 points respectively for the Baby Falcons.

In the afternoon, De La Salle Santiago Zobel outlasted the University of the Philippines Integrated School in overtime, 79-77.

Kieffer Alas' triple and Bonn Daja's split handed the Junior Archers a 79-74 lead with around two minutes left in the extra period but a Rocco Melicor basket, and an eventual free throw kept the young Fighting Maroons in the game. Nathan Egea tried to tie the game but was blocked by Daja, handing the Alabang-based squad the victory.

Daja led the Junior Archers with 21 points, while Alas and Maco Dabao chipped in 16 and 15 points, respectively.

In between the said matches, National University Nazareth School defeated University of Santo Tomas, 71-60, while University of the East won against Ateneo de Manila University, 88-80.
