Terrence Romeo shines as Terrafirma escapes Phoenix in PBA Philippine Cup opener
Terrence Romeo towed Terrafirma Dyip past the Phoenix Fuel Masters, 95-87, to open the PBA Philippine Cup on Friday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Romeo, who was held scoreless in the first half where the Dyip led 49-43, made all his 17 points in the second half as he drilled four triples for the opening day victory.
The Dyip's 30-point romp against Phoenix' 16 points in the third quarter handed them a 79-59 lead before getting a 23-point lead, 89-66, at the 8:14 mark of the fourth period.
Phoenix inched closer, 92-83, with 1:25 left but Aljun Melecio's split with 33 ticks left gave the Dyip a double-digit lead heading into the final moments of the game despite the Fuel Masters' late game efforts.
Louie Sangalang had 21 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and two assists, while Stanley Pringle chipped in his own 17 points for the Dyip.
The win spoiled Kai Ballungay's 30-point, 15-rebound output for Phoenix, while Raul Soyud added 11 points.
