Jeremy Sochan talks about Gregg Popovich's new role, future of Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs recently announced that its longtime head coach Gregg Popovich will transition to a new role within the organization.

From being head coach, Popovich is now the president of basketball operations of the club.

For Jeremy Sochan, however, just being with Popovich is a blessing for him.

"My first year in the league, he was my coach. Truly blessed, honored to be coached by someone who, you know, has the most wins in the NBA. You could say he's the best coach ever to live," Sochan told the Philippine media on Wednesday in his visit at the NBA Philippines office.

The 21-year old forward is in Manila for the NBA Rising Stars Invitational Philippine qualifiers this weekend.

"I'm just happy that he's still a part of the organization and he's still having some involvement in decisions and just like culture and identity. So, again, super happy for him. I know he's been working hard too in his recovery and stuff. So, it's just a blessing to be around him and the organization."

Sochan said he is also excited for the Spurs' future, especially with the likes of Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle in the team.

"I think as a team, we've matured. We're making a lot of progress. And yeah, I think we're all super excited in the building," he said.

Sochan also had good words for their new head coach Mitch Johnson.

"I've been with him since the start of my career. We've been to Poland together for Basketball Without Borders. So, you know, the relationship is there, so I'm super excited. I'm happy for him. I think he's been working hard. And, you know, he deserves it. It's going to be cool to learn from someone like Mitch," he added.

Sochan posted averages of 11.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game in the 2024-25 season.
