Group A Winners

Australia is the No. 1 seed from Group A after sweeping all three of its group phase games. The Boomers have an average winning margin of 25.7 points per game, accumulating a +77 point differential over the three contests.

The Australians began the tournament with a 36-point blowout of South Korea, 97–61. They led by as many as 28 points in their next game against Lebanon before cruising to a 13-point win, 93–80. The Boomers then closed out the group stage with a 110–82 win over Qatar to secure the top spot and advance directly to the quarterfinals.

‘Three-Peat’ hopes and unbeaten streak

Australia is looking to complete a rare three-peat in the FIBA Asia Cup after winning both the 2017 and 2022 editions. In fact, since joining the Asia region in 2017, Australia has remained unbeaten, going a perfect 6–0 in both previous tournaments.

That’s not to say it has been a walk in the park. The Boomers barely escaped Lebanon in the 2022 Asia Cup Finals, 75–73. However, they returned in 2025 with a revamped roster featuring no holdovers from the previous gold-medal team, which included NBA veteran Thon Maker and fellow FIBA All-Star Five member Mitch McCarron.

New faces

Unlike in top-tier competitions where the Boomers field stars like Patty Mills, Josh Giddey, and Dyson Daniels, this year's squad features several new faces.

Their most impressive player so far has been 22-year-old Jaylin Galloway, who is averaging 18 points per game on 64.3% shooting, including a blistering 8-of-11 (72.7%) from three-point range through three group stage games. They have also seen standout performances from guard Reyne Smith, who is averaging 13.3 points per game, and William Hickey (10 points and 6 assists per game).

Australia can also lean on a few more experienced players, such as Olympians Jack McVeigh (13.7 PPG and 3.3 three-pointers made per game in the Asia Cup) and Will Magnay, as well as FIBA World Cup veterans Jack White and Xavier Cooks.

Schedule

Gilas Pilipinas will take on Australia on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
