JM Bravo, King Gurtiza dedicate PBA draft to departed loved ones
The PBA Rookie Draft was more than just a career milestone for JM Bravo and King Gurtiza as the former NCAA stars dedicated their selections to their departed loved ones.
Former Emilio Aguinaldo College standout King Gurtiza went second in the fifth round to Phoenix, while Lyceum of the Philippines product JM Bravo was taken first in the sixth round by Terrafirma as both players took the first step in their PBA dreams.
But the draft was bigger than basketball for the two.
Gurtiza offered it to his late mother, who died a month ago on the same day of his college graduation.
"From losing my Mama on the day of my graduation a month ago... to being called and drafted on the PBA," Gurtiza said in a post.
"I know you’re super proud up there, Ma. Para sayo ‘to palagi."
Bravo, meanwhile, honored the memory of his father, who passed away earlier this year, just weeks after he wrapped up what turned out to be his final year with LPU in Season 100.
"PAPA yung anak mo na draft sa PBA! Natupad na yung isang pangarap ko na pinangako ko sayo," Bravo said.
[PAPA your son was drafted in the PBA! One of the dreams that I promised you has come true.]
Bravo also expressed his gratitude to the Dyip for taking a chance on him despite a rocky NCAA campaign last year, where he health and injury issues.
Bravo was initially ruled out of the season after sustaining a spine injury last September, but made a surprise return the following month to bolster the Pirates. Just days after his comeback, however, he was stretchered off the court after collapsing mid-game.
Fortunately, no serious injury was found, allowing Bravo to finish the season as LPU eventually bowed to Mapua University in the Final Four.
