Preparations underway for repatriation of Divine Adili's remains to Nigeria, says Ateneo
Preparations are underway for the repatriation of the remains of Ateneo de Manila University student-athlete Divine Adili to his country Nigeria.
Nearly two weeks after the tragic drowning incident in Aurora that claimed the lives of Adili and teammate Rene Baterbonia, the university said it is coordinating with Adili's family and relevant authorities to facilitate his return home for burial.
"As part of the University's continuing commitment to Divine Adili and his family, preparations are underway for the repatriation of Divine's remains to Nigeria, where he will be laid to rest in accordance with his family's wishes," Ateneo said in an update on Saturday.
Ateneo added that Fr. Munching de Guzman SJ is one of the two representatives to accompany Adili on his journey back home. The University added that de Guzman has already started obtaining the required vaccinations and medications to enter Nigeria.
"While documentary and travel arrangements are still being finalized in coordination with Divine's family and the relevant authorities, preparations continue to ensure that Divine's return home is carried out with dignity, care, and respect," Ateneo added.
"We ask the Ateneo community to continue keeping Divine and his family in your prayers."
A public wake was held for Adili at the Arlington Memorial Chapels earlier this week. A candle-light service was also held for the late Nigerian center at the Ateneo, which was attended to by his teammates, now-resigned head coach Tab Baldwn, and several members of the school community.
Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Manila, Ambassador Regina K. Aondona, also paid a condolence visit last Monday.
