B.League: Mike Phillips heads to Japan, signs with Kyoto Hannaryz

Mike Phillips' impressive FIBA debut with Gilas Pilipinas has opened the door to a new chapter as the high-energy big man heads to Japan after signing a two-year deal with B.League club Kyoto Hannaryz.

Kyoto announced Phillips' signing on Tuesday as the former La Salle standout inked a deal that will see him suit up through 2028.

"I’m truly honored and grateful for the opportunity to join the Kyoto Hannaryz organization and the B.LEAGUE. During my college years, I had the chance to play in several tournaments in Japan, and those experiences left a strong impression on me," Phillips said. "I’m excited to return and experience the passion of basketball in Japan once again."

The 24-year-old forward is coming off a championship run and a Finals MVP feat in the UAAP Season 88, capping off a colorful collegiate stint that had already seen him capture one title in Season 86.

Phillips was also part of the Gilas Pilipinas squad that reclaimed the gold medal at the 2023 Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia.

However, it was only recently that he made his debut in a FIBA-sanctioned tournament after being granted local status last February.

He officially made his debut during the third window of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers earlier this month, putting together averages of 4.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.0 steals in Gilas' losses to New Zealand and Australia.

He's now ready to begin a new chapter in his young basketball career in Japan's premier basketball fixture with Kyoto, which finished with a 20-40 win-loss record last season.

"I’m looking forward to giving my all every day alongside my teammates and competing hard for the Kyoto fans and community throughout the season," Phillips said.
