Mosley almost surrendered to Pacquiao

Now it can be told. A month after losing a lopsided unanimous decision against pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, Sugar Shane Mosley was actually on the verge of quitting in the last few rounds of the title fight for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight championship. Other than the severe punishment inflicted on him by the reigning champion, Mosley was also bothered by the blisters on his feet, which he later admitted in a post-fight press conference, that limited his movement inside the ring. A conversation between Mosley and his highly-esteemed trainer Nazeem Richardson, was caught on video in between rounds late in the bout, had the challenger from Pomona, California asking his chief corner man to put an end to the fight. "You've got to stop the fight," Mosley told Richardson. "Shane, you're cut from a different cloth, baby," the trainer answered back. The Examiner was the first to break the news, adding the exchange of words between Mosley and Richardson is among the highlights of the final episode of the Pacquiao-Mosley Fight Camp 360 reality television series that revolves around the fight and post-fight incidents. "I can't move," Mosley admitted to Richardson. While Richardson said he didn't want more harm on Mosley, he still believes the 39-year-old American had some gas left in his tank and capable of finishing the fight up on his feet. Mosley never had that chance and lost by a mile on all three judges' scorecards. A five-time world champion, Mosley went down in the third round when Pacquiao nailed him with a sneaky left straight. He was never the same again after that knockdown, spending the rest of the fight by running around the ring, which earned a chorus of boos from the capacity crowd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Pacquiao, the eight-time world champion, tried to go for the killer, but failed to pin down the elusive challenger. "Takbo ng takbo," said the Pacman of Mosley. While the Filipino retained his title, Mosley was the third consecutive fighter to go the distance with him after Joshua Clottey and Antonio Margarito. It could have made a lot of difference had Richardson agreed to Mosley's request. - JVP, GMA News
