Boxing: PHL's Suarez a win away from London Olympics berth

Filipino boxer Charly Suarez is now one win away from qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics after defeating Daisuke Narimatsu at the AIBA Asian Olympic Qualifying Event.

Suarez outscored Narimatsu in all three rounds. The Filipino ended the first round with a slim 4-3 lead before establishing a better cushion in the second, 9-5. He was relentless in round three, putting on an offensive show to outscore his opponent 11-3 for a 24-11 final score.

Suarez opened up his Olympic campaign with a 14-11 win against against Madadi Nagzibekov of Tajikistan. It was a come from behind win for Suarez after trailing 2-1 in the first round. He recovered in the last two rounds to outscore his opponent 4-2 and 5-4, respectively. Suarez, in his second match, dominated Kyrzgystan's Abdlay Uulu Anarbay 14-5 to set up a semifinals match against Narimatsu.

The Filipino will face China's Quiang Liu in 60 kilogram division finals. Twelve of the 25 spots for the London Olympics have been awarded at the 2012 AIBA Asian Olympic Qualifying Event, and Suarez will be fighting for the final slot to be given for the lightweight class. — JVP, GMA News
