Pinoy fighter Renan Trongco defends WBC title against Japanese foe on Saturday

Filipino southpaw Renan Trongco is set to defend his WBC international flyweight title against Hayato Yamaguchi at Mall of Asia Music Hall this Saturday.

The hard-hitting Palawan native was last seen in action this past June when he stopped Jopher Marayan in two rounds. His Japanese opponent Yamaguchi holds a record of 12-4-1 with 2 knockouts and is coming off five consecutive victories.

"This is a championship bout so it will be a good fight," said the event promoter Bebot Elorde. "This is Philippines versus Japan. The Japanese did not fly over to lose, he's coming to win."

A two-time world title challenger, Trongco (15-4, 9KOs) aims to climb the world rankings in hopes to challenge for another world title.

The event is promoted by Elorde International Productions and is open to the public for free.

The fight will be televised on GMA News TV on October 5 at 11 a.m. — JST, GMA News
