Asian Games: Olympian Barriga marches into quarterfinals
Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga won via unanimous decision against Japan's Tosho Kashiwasaki in the men's light flyweight round of 16 on Sunday to book a quarterfinals spot and keep the Philippines' hopes for a gold medal alive.
Other Pinoy boxers Mario Fernandez and Charly Suarez earlier qualified for the quarters in the men's bantamweight and lightweight divisions.
But Ian Clark Bautista failed to advance to the quarters after losing via unanimous decision to Sangdon choe of host nation South Korea in the men's fly weight division on Saturday.
Pinay boxers Josie Gabuco (flyweight) and Nesthy Petecio (lightweight) also bowed out of the Asiad after both falling via unanimous decision to Vietnam's Le Thi Bang and China's Junhua Yin, respectively, on Sunday.
In the men's middleweight, Wilfredo Lopez will try to get into the quarters on Monday as he battles Waheed Abdulridha Waheed Waheed in the round of 16.
In tennis, Treat Huey and Ruben Gonzales Jr. were also knocked out of the quarterfinals after yielding 6-0, 6-3 to Korean pair Yongkyu Lim and Hyeon Chung in the men's doubles. — JST, GMA News
