Sparring partner confirms Pacquiao's power after getting knocked down twice

MACAU — Stan Martyniouk couldn't believe the power of Manny Pacquiao.

And he sees the Filipino champion dominating Chris Algieri when they clash for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title this Sunday at Cotai Arena inside The Venetian here.

Martyniouk, a Sacramento native who was tapped to serve as sparring partner during Pacquiao's grueling seven-week preparation for the fight, said the Sarangani representative is not just hungry, but in a deadly shape that could send Algieri to sleep in the early part of their scheduled 12-round duel.

In fact, the Filipino ring idol sent him down twice, the last coming just last week when they engaged in a three-round sparring session in General Santos City.

Aside from that, Pacquiao also left Martyniouk with a bloody face, proving that he has the power to go for the kill come fight day.

“I believe Manny is in tremendous shape. I saw the hunger in his eyes during training and he was very motivated for his fight, his speed is there and so is his power,” said Martyniouk, who is trained by Virgil Hunter and managed by Cameron Dunkin.

“Sparring Manny Pacquiao was such a great experience. I learned a lot. He brought out the best in me. I had to do my best at all times because Manny is very hard to spar against. He doesn’t go light on you. If he hurts you he was trying to take you out.”

Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, said they brought in Martyniouk to give Pacquiao a preview of fighting a taller, heftier fighter like Algieri. Also brought in was Viktor Postol, who has the same level of aggressiveness as Algieri.

"These two guys fight like Algieri," said Roach, predicting a cakewalk for his prized ward. "If Manny dominates them, there's no way he couldn't dominate a fighter like Algieri. Manny is all pumped up and ready to go." — STR/JST, GMA News
