Knee injury could force Juan Manuel Marquez to retire

Three-division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez might be heading towards retirement sooner than expected.

The gritty Mexican, who is most remembered for his four epic fights with Manny Pacquiao, suffered a knee injury prior to his fight last May against Mike Alvarado.

Marquez went back to the gym in the last quarter of 2014 but halted his training after his injury started to bother him again, saying that his knee didn't respond as expected.

Talking to ESPN Deportes, the 41-year-old Marquez took the time to look back at the past year then eventually contemplated retirement.

"It was a good year (2014). We had one fight but it was good. I wanted to do another fight but [there were] circumstances regarding my training, regarding [the injury to my] knee that I suffered before the fight with Mike Alvarado," said Marquez.

"I do not want to retire, but if the body does not allow me I will be forced into retirement. I know the fans want to see me [in the ring], but if the physical does not answer me, I'll have to leave things alone."

Marquez is scheduled to hold a meeting with his promoter Fernando Beltran to discuss his future. —JST, GMA News
