Pinoy boxer Milan Melindo loses world title bid in Mexico
By JM SIASAT
Word rated Filipino boxer Milan Melindo fell short in his second world title attempt, losing by a technical unanimous decision to IBF world light flyweight champion Javier Mendoza, Saturday (Sunday, PHL time), at Camp Nuevo Ensenada in Baja California, Mexico.
In a bout filled with low blows and headbutts, the hometown favorite Mendoza started strong as expected while Melindo struggled to find his rhythm in the first half of the fight.
In round 5, referee Gerard White decided to deduct a point from Melindo after a seemingly accidental low blow to the defending champion.
An accidental headbutt in round 6 opened a cut on top of Melindo's right eye. Shortly after, another clash of heads followed by a right hand from Melindo drew another cut, this time on top of Mendoza's left eye.
The referee waved the contest at the 2:39 mark of round 6 upon the ringside physician's advise deeming the Mexican unable to continue. The scorecards were 60-52, 60,52 and 59-53 all in favor of Mendoza.
The win improved Mendoza's record to 24-2-1 with 19 knockouts while Melindo fell to 32-2 with 12 knockouts. - RAF, GMA News
