Pinoy boxer Bernabe Concepcion stops Tanzanian foe to capture WBO belt

Two-time world title challenger Bernabe Concepcion made quick work of Juma Fundi to capture the vacant WBO Oriental super bantamweight title on Friday at Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay.

After a feeling-out start in round one, Concepcion turned up the heat in round two by throwing hard shots to the head and body of his visiting foe.

A perfectly timed right hand to the head by Concepcion sent Fundi crashing to the canvass. The Tanzanian got up before the ten count but was too hurt to continue the fight, prompting referee Danrex Tapdasan to wave the contest at the 0:56 mark of round two.

"Bernabe prepared really hard for this fight," said Concepcion's manager Ryan Gabriel.

"I noticed in the very first round he's (Fundi) heavy handed, it's just that Bernabe was able to read and time him [with his right hand]."

The win improved Concepcion's record to 34-6-3 with 20 knockouts while Fundi dropped to 27-13-3 with 11 knockouts.

Gabriel cites that they're looking to pit Concepcion against Chris Avalos (25-3, 19KOs) in his next fight. - RAF, GMA News
