Pinoy boxer Bernabe Concepcion must prove worth vs. tough foe in next fight

Hard-hitting Catanduanes native Bernabe Concepcion is eager to get back on the world stage, but the former title challenger must first prove he belongs against a tough opponent, according to his manager Ryan Gabriel.

"We're looking at Chris Avalos for his next fight," Gabriel told GMA News Online.

"We want to bring back Bernabe [to the world stage] but before that he has to prove he can win against a tough competition."

Avalos, 25, holds a record of 26-3 with 19 knockouts. A former world title challenger himself, Avalos is well known in Philippine boxing for defeating once0hot Filipino prospect Drian Francisco.

Avalos etched out a unanimous decision win over Rey Perez this past weekend while Concepcion (34-6-2, 20KOs), is coming off a knockout against Tanzanian Juma Fundi in two rounds to capture the vacant WBO oriental super bantamweight title

"We tried this fight against Juma Fundi to see where he's at. Basing on his record we thought it will be a good test because of his experience," Gabriel said.

"The team is currently in talks with Golden Boy Promotions. If there is a good undercard to put the fight on then we'll fight there. If not, we'll proceed with the plan to promote the fight (Concepcion vs. Avalos) in October at the Ynares Sports Arena." —JST, GMA News
