Roman Gonzalez: Donnie Nietes doesn't want to fight me

Does Filipino two-division world champion Donnie Nietes want to test his mettle against Roman Gonzalez of Nicaragua?

Gonzalez, who is now ranked as the no. 1 pound-for-pound boxer in the world since Floyd Mayweather's retirement, doesn't seem to think so.

"Donnie Nietes supposedly wants to fight me and unify titles, but when we were at 105 pounds and 108 pounds, I met him in Mexico to talk about [a possible fight] and he didn't want to," Gonzalez told boxingscene.com.

"I honestly do not think he wants to [fight me]."

Nietes, 33, successfully defended his world light flyweight title for the 8th time last October 17 (October 18 PHL time) in California.

Gonzalez fought on the same day when he defeated Brian Viloria by an impressive 9th round TKO to extend his unbeaten streak to 44-0 with 38 knockouts. —JM Siasat/JST, GMA News
