Senate commends Pacquiao on victory over Broner

The Senate has adopted a resolution commending Senator Manny Pacquiao for successfully defending his World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight title against American boxer Adrien “The Problem” Broner over the weekend.

All senators were made co-authors of Senate Resolution 992 upon the motion of Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri on Wednesday.

The resolution was introduced by Senator Aquilino Pimentel III, who said Pacquiao once again proved to the world why he is the well-loved "Filipino King of the Ring."

Other senators have also filed their respective resolutions.

They commended Pacquiao “for bringing honor and glory to the Philippines, spurring the Filipino pride, and inspiring people of all walks of life that victory comes at any age for those who work hard, persevere, and have faith.”

“With every victory, Pacquiao exemplifies Filipino values of love for God, love for family, love for the people, as well as humility, and magnanimity,” the resolution said.

Pacquiao, 40, beat the younger Broner by unanimous decision on January 19, 2019 (US time) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

His match with Broner was the first defense of his WBA welterweight title after defeating Lucas Matthysse in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in July 2018.

The senators said despite his age, Pacquiao, the only eight-division world champion in boxing history and the only senator with a boxing world title, displayed excellent boxing form and was far more active than his 29-year old opponent, throwing 568 punches compared to Broner’s 295 to claim the 61st victory of his remarkable career.  —KBK, GMA News
