Floyd Mayweather’s uncle and trainer Roger passes away at 58
Roger Mayweather, a former two-division world champion who trained his nephew Floyd Mayweather Jr., has passed away on Tuesday.
According to a report from boxingscene.com, Roger died after a long battle with diabetes. He was 58 years old.
The multi-titled trainer, along with his brother Floyd Sr., helped Floyd Jr. rose to stardom in the world of boxing.
“My uncle was one of the most important people in my life inside and outside of the ring,” Floyd Jr. said in another report.
Floyd Jr., who is still grieving the loss of his children’s mother Josie Harris, said Roger was a “great champion and one of the best trainers in boxing.”
“Roger meant the world to me, my father Floyd Sr., my uncle Jeff, our whole family, everyone in and around the Mayweather Boxing Gym and the entire boxing world. It is a terrible loss for all of us,” he said.
Roger finished his decorated 17-year boxing career in 1999 behind a 59-13 record, including 35 knockouts.
He was able to fight the likes of late legend Pernell Whitaker, Julio Cesar Chavez and Samuel Serrano.
Roger’s passing came just a week after Josie, the mother of three of Floyd Jr.’s children, death. She was 40. --Ma. Angelica Garcia/MGP, GMA News
