Oscar de la Hoya already has a trainer in mind for comeback fight

Retired six-division champion Oscar de la Hoya continues to tease a trip back inside the boxing ring at 47 years old.

De La Hoya last saw action in 2008 where he was beaten to retirement via eight-round technical knockout by Manny Pacquiao.

He says that he has been training on the regular these days, and even he already has a trainer in mind should he pursue his desire for a comeback.

“The only person that comes to mind [to train me], the only person that I would ask humbly is Floyd Mayweather Sr.,” De La Hoya told SI Boxing Podcast.

“Floyd Mayweather Sr. is the only trainer that can tell me to wake up at 5 in the morning. He’s the only trainer who can push my buttons and make me work hard and smart. So I would actually go to him and humbly ask him to do a favor for me.”

De La Hoya has worked with various trainers throughout his career including Hall of Fame trainers Nacho Beristain and Angelo Dundee but trusts it is Mayweather Sr. who can whip him back in fighting shape.

“A serious boxing camp, it’s two or three levels that I have to get by and then step it up a notch and that notch is ultimately is sparring with big-time fighters,” he said.

“Fighters who have experience, fighters who are championship caliber. By September I’m hoping to spar 12 rounds on a regular basis. By that time I do want to make that decision of fighting the first quarter of next year.”

And despite the 12-year layoff, De La Hoya insists that he is still capable of beating some in the fight game.

“I can do some damage to a few fighters out there,” he stressed.

“Skill is involved obviously. My power, you never lose power. Maybe my timing will be off a little, but that’s something I have to figure out when I’m out there. There’s a lot of things that come into play, but I strongly feel that I can do it.” – JM Siasat/RC, GMA News
