Jeff Horn contemplates retirement after recent stoppage loss

Former WBO world welterweight champion Jeff Horn is contemplating retirement following a one-sided beatdown from Tim Tszyu last Wednesday at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville, Australia.

The 32-year-old Horn was dominated by Tszyu right from the opening bell with his relentless pressure and body shots. He quit on his stool before the start of round 9 which ended the fight by way of eight-round technical knockout.

“I’ll go home and talk to Jo (wife) but I know what she’s going to say. In the end, I have to ask if I have more in the tank or is that it,” Horn said after the fight.

Horn became a familiar name in 2017 after he defeated Manny Pacquiao via controversial split decision to claim the WBO world welterweight title. He was able to defend the title once but lost it in his second defense against Terence Crawford via ninth-round technical knockout.

“I probably don’t have the hunger of Tim Tszyu. I’ve been there, done the world title, I was just fighting for the big fights and the mountain was too big for me tonight,” he said.

Tszyu, son of retired light welterweight world champion Kostya Tszyu, is an unbeaten prospect who holds a record of 16-0 with 12 knockouts. He flew to the Philippines last year to work as Manny Pacquiao’s sparring partner for the latter’s preparation for Keith Thurman.

The often proud and confident Horn was humble in defeat, stating that Tszyu was simply the better man that fateful night.

“He was very good he made me look silly out there. It was more of a relief than anything that the referee was saying he’d seen enough.” – JM Siasat/RC, GMA News
