Canelo Alvarez battles Callum Smith for the super middleweight title next month
Boxing’s number one pound-for-pound fighter Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will be back in action when he takes on WBA Super Middleweight champion Callum Smith on December 19 in a yet to be determined venue in Texas.
The announcement was made on Instagram live by Alvarez (53-1-2, 36KOs) himself.
Also in a surprising twist, Alvarez’s next fight would air on streaming app DAZN even after he severed ties with the company and his longtime promoter Golden Boy Promotions earlier this month.
The upcoming fight will mark Alvarez’s first trip inside the ring since November 2019 against Sergey Kovalev where he won the WBO world light heavyweight title by way of eleventh-round knockout to become a four-division champion.
Smith (27-0, 19KOs), meanwhile, has been off the ring for more than a year as well. He last fought John Ryder in November 2019 at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England, where he successfully defended his title via unanimous decision. -- BAP, GMA News
