Alvarez vs Smith heads to Alamodome in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic

The USA has the most number of COVID-19 cases in the world, but it would not stop four-division champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez from letting his fans watch him fight in the flesh.

Alvarez’s return to action against The RING and WBA world super middleweight champion Callum Smith on Dec. 19 will be witnessed by a limited live audience as the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, is set to host the mega event.

The announcement was made on Saturday morning (Philippine time) by Alvarez’s Canelo Promotions and Matchroom Boxing.

“I am thrilled to be back at the Alamodome and very thankful to be fighting in front of my fans on Dec. 19,” said Alvarez.

“I have great memories of my previous bouts in Texas, and I expect this to be a special fight to close out the year.”

Boxing events have been mostly audience-free since the COVID-19 pandemic. Knowing the risks of spreading the virus, Alamodome general manager Steve Zito says they would implement strict safety measures to ensure a pleasant experience for the fans in attendance on fight night.

“Since fan safety is our number one priority, the Alamodome has created and implemented a comprehensive COVID-19 reopening plan,” he said.

“The venue is prepared to offer patrons a memorable, safe, and exciting fight night experience.” – JM Siasat/RC, GMA News
