Canelo Alvarez gives thumbs down to YouTubers crossing over to boxing
The RING and WBA world middleweight world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez finds it disrespectful when YouTubers such as Logan and Jake Paul cross over to boxing.
In November, Jake Paul fought former NBA player Nate Robinson in the co-main event of Tyson vs Jones, where the YouTuber won by way of second-round knockout.
His brother Logan, who previously fought in an exhibition and a pro boxing match against internet figure KSI, is set to fight Floyd Mayweather in an exhibition in January 2021.
Such fights, according to the pound-for-pound king, are all about money and that does not sit well with him.
“You know, it’s all about the money. I don’t think we would agree that people that are basketball players, that are YouTubers get licenses,” Alvarez told TMZ.
“You know, I don’t criticize [the Paul brothers]. This is a very risky sport, and if you go up there, it’s very risky.”
Alvarez is set to challenge The RING and WBA world super middleweight champion Callum Smith this weekend at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
Asked if he would ever entertain such bout in the same nature as what the Paul brothers do, the Mexican champion quickly gave a hard no.
“I truly believe that it’s a lack of respect. It’s all based on money. It’s all for money,” he said.
“I’m focused right now on other projects. For true fighters, I do believe it is a lack of respect.”
And should the likes of Jake or Logan Paul ever want to feel what it is like to fight on the top level, Alvarez invited them to meet him inside the ring to learn how it is truly done.
“I have other stuff going on, and I would invite him for a sparring session so that he truly knows what it’s all about.” – JM Siasat/RC, GMA News
