De La Hoya eyes Mayweather rematch for his comeback fight

Retired six-division champion Oscar De La Hoya is interested in fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. for a second time should he make the comeback that he has teased for months.

De La Hoya and Mayweather shared the ring in 2007 where the latter emerged victorious by way of split decision to claim the WBC world junior middleweight title.

The 47-year-old De La Hoya has also mentioned Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez as a possible foe but has since changed his mind after Mayweather was able to beat the Mexican in 2013.

“I’ve always prided myself on fighting the very best. And why go after the second best? Why not go after the guy that beat him?” De La Hoya told Fight Hub TV.

“Why not go after Mayweather for instance, in a revenge fight? That is something that's very intriguing. We’ll see how I feel and then we’ll take it from there.”

The 43-year-old Mayweather, for his part, has retired from boxing in 2017 after he defeated mixed martial arts superstar Conor McGregor.

Mayweather last saw action in an exhibition against Tenshin Nasukawa on December 31, 2018, where won via stoppage in the first round.

He is scheduled to feature in another exhibition on February 20, 2020, in a yet to be determined venue against Youtuber Logan Paul. -- BAP, GMA News
