Ben Askren concedes he deserves ridicule for losing to Jake Paul
Former Bellator and ONE Championship welterweight champion Ben Askren is willing to accept all the ridicule in the world after losing to Youtube sensation Jake Paul.
Askren, 19-2 as a mixed martial artist, made his pro boxing debut against Paul (3-0, 3KOs) this past weekend where he lost via first-round technical knockout.
Paul, often criticized as not being a legitimate fighter due to his questionable opponents, scored his biggest win to date against a martial arts veteran in Askren.
“It’s probably deserved,” answered Askren when asked about the massive ridicule he is about to get after losing.
“I got knocked out by Jake Paul. It’s f**king embarrassing. I didn’t let the MMA community down, I let the world down,” he cited.
“People hate Jake Paul and they wanted to see me make him miserable. I didn’t do that, so I didn’t let the MMA community down, I let the world down.”
While it was indeed an embarrassing loss, Askren took home a guaranteed fight purse of $500,000 - his highest career payday to date.
And while some are protesting that the fight was stopped early, Askren himself seems to care less about what transpired inside the ring.
“I thought I was fine, but you know, whatever,” Askren quipped. “That’s his job and if that’s what he felt, that’s what he did.” — JMB, GMA News
