Saunders would have risked his life if he fought on says Canelo

Unified Super Middleweight World Champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez believes it would have been too dangerous for Billy Joe Saunders to continue fighting after the punishment he took in round 8 when they met inside the ring this past weekend.

The previously unbeaten Saunders retired on his stool before the start of round 9 during their world championship showdown, earning the Mexican boxing superstar an eighth-round technical knockout victory over the former.

“It’s hard because I saw when he broke his cheekbone, I went back to the corner and I told Eddy that I didn’t think he can continue. When you break your cheekbone, you can risk your life and you can’t continue that way,” said Alvarez.

The Brit took lots of criticism from fans, scribes, and fighters alike for waving the white flag only to find out that he suffered multiple fractures in the orbital area. He spent the night at the hospital and had to undergo surgery.

The No.1 pound-for-pound fighter Alvarez, who now holds The RING, WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight world titles, is now seeking the final piece of his collection which is the IBF world title currently by Caleb Plant. -- BAP, GMA News
