Olympian Irish Magno taking it one step at a time after Round of 32 win
Philippine boxing bet Irish Magno said she would rather take her 2020 Tokyo Olympics journey one step at a time.
“Huwag muna tayo mag-aim high, step by step muna tayo,” Magno said in a statement after her victory over Kenya's Christine Ongare in the Round of 32 of the women's flyweight division on Sunday.
Magno won via a unanimous decision to advance to the Round of 16, which will take place on Thursday.
She was impressive in the win, taking all three rounds on all five judges' scorecards and even scoring a 10-8 round on one.
Fellow boxer Nesthy Petecio on Saturday also made it to the Round of 16 of the women's featherweight division. Petecio will see action in the boxing ring Monday.
Carlo Paalam, meanwhile, will make his debut in the ring also on Monday for the men's flyweight Round of 32 against Irish national Irvine Brendan.
Eumir Marcial, one of the Philippines' bets for the gold medal, is already assured of a slot in the Round of 16 and will fight on Thursday, too.
