Jonas Sultan weighs in on possible Ancajas-Casimero showdown, set for ring return on October
Former world title challenger Jonas Sultan shared his take on a possible matchup between IBF world super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas and three-division champion John Riel Casimero.
Sultan, who holds a record of 17-5 with 11 knockouts, defeated Casimero in 2017 via unanimous decision then lost to Ancajas in his next fight also via unanimous decision.
His bout with the now WBO world bantamweight champ Casimero was a title eliminator, meaning the brash Filipino could have been in the ring with Ancajas if only he got past Sultan.
"It will be a 50-50 fight. Even though I defeated Casimero, he is a good fighter and so is Jerwin," Sultan said.
"Styles make fights, maybe my style was just a good counter to Casimero and Ancajas' style counters me," he added.
Earlier this week, Team Ancajas said that they are willing to move up to the 118-pound division to face either Nonito Donaire Jr. or Casimero if given the chance.
And while nothing is set in stone, Sultan gives a slight advantage to Ancajas in case the fantasy fight comes to fruition.
"I would give the advantage to Ancajas. He has the height, smart, and has power," he said.
Sultan, 29, last saw action on the undercard of Casimero vs. Rigondeaux last August where he defeated Sharone Carter via seventh-round knockout.
He is reportedly slated to return to action against the hard-hitting Carlos Caballo (14-0, 14KOs) on October 30 in New York in a yet to be announced venue.
