Nonito Donaire welcomes potential world title showdown with Jerwin Ancajas
Four-division world champion Nonito Donaire Jr. is open to the idea of staking his WBC world bantamweight title against the current IBF world super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas.
The long-time 115-pounder Ancajas has always wanted to move up to the bantamweight division. In a previous interview, Ancajas also stated that he would love to challenge John Riel Casimero and Donaire for their respective world titles if given the opportunity.
As far as Donaire is concerned, he sees a potential showdown with Ancajas as a win-win situation though he iterated that his goal right now is to unify the world titles at 118 pounds.
“Definitely,” Donaire answered if he would welcome a fight with Ancajas down the line.
“I think that again with a Filipino versus Filipino, it is a win-win situation for Philippine boxing. For now, we are definitely going for the undisputed until they come into this division, but I definitely welcome his challenge.”
Meanwhile, Donaire’s wife and manager Rachel cannot foresee any roadblock that would prevent an Ancajas fight from taking place. At the moment, however, she said that Nonito's mandatory challenger Reymart Gaballo is most likely up next.
“I do not think it would be difficult [to make],” she quipped.
“But like most of the things that happen, I am just the manager, so I would have to discuss with Richard Schaefer, and then he would be able to do what he does best, which is magic.”
