Gary Russell blames boxing politics for loss to Mark Magsayo: 'Took the ol' boy to school'
Former WBC world featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr. is blaming boxing "politics" after he suffered a majority decision loss at the hands of Mark Magsayo this past weekend at the Borgata Hotel Casino in Atlantic City, USA.
Russell, 33, revealed before the contest that he was not a hundred percent going into the fight because of an injury. During the bout, Russell had hurt his right shoulder during an exchange and was unable to throw a single jab from round six to twelve.
He believes, though, that he won that fight comfortably.
“Politics is a bad motherf***er. I've beat that boy at least ten rounds to two, nine to three. Took the ol' boy to school. I don't know man, it is what it is,” Russell said on a video posted on Instagram.
“I am a true dog at the end of the day though. I f***ed my arm up like two weeks before.”
The injury proved costly for Russell, who is known for his lethal jabs and right hook, as two of the judges saw the fight for Magsayo while the other had it a draw. To his credit, he held his own until the final round even with just one hand.
“We put the work in, still fought, and to be honest you, I outclassed him, outschooled him, outboxed him with one motherf***in arm.”
