Rey Vargas up next for Mark Magsayo
Unbeaten mandatory challenger Rey Vargas is up next for the newly crowned WBC world featherweight champion Mark Magsayo.
The news came earlier Wednesday (Philippine time) during WBC's traditional meeting with Mexico's local media. Though WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman was not in the meeting, the message was conveyed through an official representative by the WBC.
"Coming off a long [layoff because of] injury then COVID-19, thank God I am back. I can't ask for anything more. Going straight for the title makes me feel very happy. I am very happy that the WBC reiterated my position as the title challenger," said Vargas.
Magsayo (24-0, 16KOs) captured the WBC world featherweight title this weekend when he defeated Gary Russell Jr. via majority decision. Vargas (35-0, 22 KOs), meanwhile, is coming off a unanimous decision nod over Leonardo Baez last November.
