Rey Vargas a tough but beatable opponent for Mark Magsayo
Veteran boxing analyst Atty. Ed Tolentino believes that Rey Vargas is a tough yet beatable opponent for WBC world featherweight champion Mark Magsayo.
Vargas, who holds an unblemished record of 35-0 with 22 knockouts, received word from the WBC that he is indeed the mandatory challenger to Magsayo’s title though an official order is yet to be released by the sanctioning body.
“Vargas is like Emanuel Navarrete in terms of size. He is tall, has the reach, and has a high octane offense. He is a former junior featherweight world champion and undefeated in 35 fights but has not scored a knockout since 2016,” said Tolentino.
“Vargas is young and big enough to accommodate 126 pounds. It is also a very good fight though tougher compared to Leo Santa Cruz. He has a high volume style of fighting, younger, bigger, and undefeated so his confidence is high.”
Magsayo, meanwhile, has repeatedly expressed his desire to unify the title with the WBA world featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz. According to Tolentino, a fight with Vargas would be harder while a showdown with Santa Cruz would bring more money for Magsayo.
“Vargas is going to be a tougher fight it just so happens that Santa Cruz is the more marketable,” Tolentino noted. — LA, GMA News
