Ancajas fought Martinez's fight in 10th title defense says analyst

Former IBF world super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas made the mistake of fighting Fernando Martinez’s fight according to veteran boxing analyst Atty. Ed Tolentino.

Ancajas, 30, made the tenth defense of his then title this past weekend against Martinez at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas where the latter pulled off a major upset by defeating the Filipino by way of a clear-cut unanimous decision.

“It was a good fight, but Ancajas played the game of Martinez. He fell into the trap of Martinez. Look at the ratio, Martinez threw 1046 punches. This guy was averaging 69 punches per round and landed 41%. But it was a good fight, a lesson learned for Ancajas,” Tolentino said.

“When Ancajas was able to put his punches together it turned out good for him it turned out well for him. By the fifth round, Martinez's started to take over. Ancajas was landing big punches, but Martinez kept landing that the referee was alarmed with the number of punches Ancajas took.”

More than 1800 punches were thrown between Ancajas and Martinez on fight night making scribes say that the championship bout was the most exciting fight yet this year. Be that as it may, Tolentino stressed that Ancajas should have avoided fighting on the inside to win.

“Hats off to these two boxers for the high octane fight. We said that Martinez is like a Rocky Balboa, punches a lot, and has a good left hook. We also mentioned that Ancajas cannot stay in the pocket because he does not excel there.” — LA, GMA News
