Ugas did not have a plan B in fighting Spence, notes analyst
Former WBA world welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas made the crucial mistake of not having a backup plan when he fought Errol Spence Jr. according to veteran boxing analyst Atty. Ed Tolentino.
Ugas, 35, was beaten to a pulp en route to getting stopped in the tenth round by the now unified WBC, IBF and WBA world welterweight champion Spence this past weekend at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, USA.
“Ugas had a plan though it backfired. He kept his defense tight then tried getting in hoping to land a counterpunch, but Spence never gave him the opportunity,” said Tolentino.
“I thought he could have been more physical, he was unable to back Spence to the ropes either and allowed Spence to establish his rhythm. Ugas did not have a plan B.”
According to Tolentino, the fight proved that their difference in skills was night and day. He also noted why Ugas failed to replicate his success against Manny Pacquiao, who he defeated last August via unanimous decision in Las Vegas.
“Spence showcased that there is a huge difference in skills and that is saying a lot because Ugas is a skilled fighter,” Tolentino stressed.
“Spence had a perfect execution, that jab made it hard for him. Ugas had success against Manny Pacquiao because the Filipino was coming in without a jab but not this one. Spence also chopped down the defense to bits with hooks and uppercuts beating Ugas to the punch.”
