Jermell Charlo stops Brian Castano to become undisputed super welterweight champion
Jermell Charlo is now the undisputed world super welterweight champion following a 10th-round knockout over Brian Castano on Sunday (Manila time) at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
Charlo, who turns 31 years old later this week, dropped Castano with a hard left hook on top with less than a minute left in round 10. Castano managed to beat the count, only to be on the receiving end of Charlo's onslaught that put him away for good.
"This is unbelievable. I did it for the USA, I did it for us! I could consider this to be nerve-wracking, I thought this was like my first fight," Charlo said after the fight.
"I knew Castano would give his all and I knew I have trained very, very hard. I wanted to make sure this was my fight. I am just super excited for everything me and my brother have put on the line. The future is bright."
Charlo, who now holds the WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO world super welterweight titles, improved his record to 35-1-1 with 19 knockouts while Castano dropped to 17-1-2 with 12 knockouts.
"This is legacy this is something that is legendary. I am a legend. They are going to keep putting them in there. When you are at the top like this, you are going to get mandatories and a bunch of number one guys. I just have to prepare and be ready for it at all times," Charlo said.
