Gervonta Davis, Rolly Romero trade barbs ahead of title showdown

WBA interim lightweight champion Gervonta Davis is convinced that Rolly Romero is far from a special fighter ahead of their title showdown on Sunday (Philippine time) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, USA.

The unorthodox and hard-hitting Romero, 14-0 with 12 knockouts as a prizefighter, previously said that he is going to stop Davis in round one. He also made other pronouncements such as being the most explosive fighter in boxing history, but Davis is simply not buying it.

"I don't think he's awkward. I just think he's a guy who just started fighting. He's like someone who just came into the gym," Davis (26-0, 24KOs) said during the pre-fight press conference.

"He's like someone who thinks he's nice now even though he hasn't gotten it down the path yet. Real fighters know awkward fighters, he's just a dumb fighter."

Romero, meanwhile, is brimming in confidence and is seemingly unbothered with what Davis brings to the table. He won eight of his last nine fights via stoppage and plans to extend his unbeaten streak come fight night.

"This guy Davis talks about everything but the fight. He's taking this fight personally. My job is just to beat him up. He's very emotional. That's why I've been calling him out," Romero said.

"He has a big head for me to hit. I'm not going to say what punch I'm getting him with, but you're all going to see on Saturday night. This is ending in one round."
